Meat eating and ant dipping by wild chimpanzees in Sierra Leone. The examination of fecal samples and carcasses suggested that adult (probably male) or adolescent chimpanzees tended to eat juvenile or subadult monkeys most frequently, as is also seen for chimpanzees in Gombe, Mahale, and Tai.Īlp, R. Chimpanzees may be the most important predators on these monkeys in the absence of leopards at Kahuzi. At least 11 – 18% of the Cercopithecus population seemed to be lost annually as a result of being killed by chimpanzees. However, the estimated rate of predation on Cercopithecus monkeys is the highest record among various chimpanzee habitats. The absence of red colobus monkeys, which are the most frequent prey in Gombe, Mahale, and Tai, might be responsible for the low predation rate. The Kahuzi chimpanzees tended to kill mammals less frequently but to kill Cercopithecus monkeys more frequently than chimpanzees in other habitats. Predation occurred in the late dry and the early rainy seasons, when the diversity of ripe fruits was the highest during the year. A juvenile l'Hoest's monkey was recorded for the first time as the prey of chimpanzees in this study. A unit-group of semi-habituated chimpanzees, composed of 22 – 23 individuals including 8 adult or adolescent males, appeared to kill about 18 – 30 mammalian prey (16 – 28 Cercopithecus monkeys) per year, if the multiple kills by chimpanzees were not considered. In some cultures the Monkeys are killed so that parts of their bodies can be used for making medicine. The rate of predation on mammals by chimpanzees was determined from carcasses and from fecal specimens found on fresh trails during a 16-month period in the montane forest of Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Zaire. The land where these animals live is continually destroyed due to logging and the trees being removed for planting sources of food. Humans are the biggest threat to the future of many Monkey species. This can make it tough for the Monkeys to know in time that dangers are lurking. ![]() Those predators can often stay well hidden in the water so they blend into the surroundings. This may make them vulnerable to crocodiles and alligators that are found in the same rivers and streams. They may cross rivers or just go swimming in them. Some species of Monkeys like to spend time in the water. They are all trying to adapt to the changes and they will consume a meal when an opportunity presents itself. It can mean everyone is outside of their natural element in the wild. That has changed though due to the number of habitats being destroyed or fragmented. In some regions the paths of such predators never crossed with Monkeys. Other primates including Chimpanzees may consume some species of Monkeys as well.Īs the regular food sources for many of these animals continues to be depleted they are eating more and more Monkeys. That will give them the upper hand most of the time. They aren’t ask skilled in the area of hunting but they often hunt as a team. The Hyena can also be a problem for Monkeys in some areas.
